MANILA – Lawmakers on Friday cited a new survey showing overwhelming public support for Vice President Sara Duterte to undergo a Senate impeachment trial, with 88 percent of Filipinos backing the move.
Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V of La Union said the Tangere survey reflects a strong demand for accountability, stressing that the public is now clearly calling for a formal venue where the Vice President can respond to allegations.
He said the result shows that the issue has moved beyond politics and now represents a nationwide call for transparency and explanation.
Conducted on April 22 to 23, the survey found that most respondents view the Senate trial as an opportunity for Duterte to defend herself rather than a form of punishment. It also showed that 70 percent want her to personally address the allegations, while 51 percent believe she should present evidence on financial concerns.
Ortega said the findings challenge claims that the impeachment process is politically driven, adding that Filipinos are demanding clarity and accountability.
House Committee on Public Accounts Chair Terry Ridon said the survey reflects a simple message from the public: they want answers based on facts, not rhetoric.
