MANILA — The partnership between LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers appears to be nearing its conclusion, with reports indicating that both sides are preparing to go their separate ways after the 2025–26 NBA season.
James, now 41, joined the Lakers in 2018 and helped deliver a championship two years later. Yet as his career approaches its twilight, signs of strain between the four-time NBA champion and the franchise have become increasingly visible.
During a recent return to Cleveland, an arena deeply tied to his legacy, James acknowledged uncertainty about his future, a comment that quickly reignited speculation about retirement or a possible move elsewhere.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the mood around the Lakers suggests that a split is no longer a surprise but an expectation.
“There’s a strong sense in Los Angeles that this is where things are headed,” Fischer said, noting that both the organization and James appear aligned in their readiness to turn the page.
Whether James ultimately retires or seeks a final chapter with another team remains unclear, but the reported separation would close a significant chapter in Lakers history—one defined by championship success, star power, and mounting questions about what comes next.
