MANILA – Colombia’s Camila Osorio mounted a thrilling comeback to defeat Croatia’s Donna Vekic, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, and capture the singles crown at the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open on Saturday night at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The world No. 84 rebounded after dropping the first set, adjusting her tactics in the second, and holding her nerve in a gripping third set to secure victory in two hours and 31 minutes.
“I have no words to describe what I’m feeling right now. I’m super happy to be in the Philippines for the first time,” said the 24-year-old baseliner. “I’ve never experienced this kind of crowd support. Thank you to everyone.”
Osorio, a Youth Olympic medalist who claimed singles bronze and mixed doubles silver with Nicolás Mejía at the 2018 Buenos Aires Games, received the champion’s trophy from Philippine Sports Commission chairperson John Patrick Gregorio, who also heads the National Sports Tourism–Inter-Agency Committee.
Her title run included wins over Japan’s Sakura Hosogi in the opening round, Mai Hontama in the second, and a quarterfinal victory over Filipino favorite and second seed Alex Eala. Osorio then advanced to the final by defeating third seed Solana Sierra of Argentina in the semifinals.
Vekic reached the championship match after toppling Japan’s Kyoka Okamura, Russia’s Mariia Tkacheva, China’s Lin Zhu, and Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova.
“Congratulations to Camila, and I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the year,” said Vekic, the 2024 Paris Olympics silver medalist and Wimbledon semifinalist.
Osorio earned USD 15,500 and 125 WTA ranking points, while Vekic collected USD 8,400 and 81 points.
