Promoting boxing and martial arts as tools for fitness, discipline, and self-defense, Wildcat Boxing and Fitness owner Margaret Te shared her advocacy and plans for grassroots development during the weekly Usapang Sports forum of the Tabloids Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS).
Te, a former amateur fighter with an 8-4-1 record, discussed her transition from competing in the ring to managing a gym that welcomes beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
Based at the Ramon Magsaysay Center Annex in Malate, Manila, Wildcat Boxing and Fitness offers training in boxing, mixed martial arts (MMA), Muay Thai and other combat disciplines.
Te said martial arts training goes beyond physical conditioning, providing participants with a healthy way to manage emotions while developing confidence, discipline and practical self-defense skills.
“Inside the gym, people learn how to channel their emotions healthily and constructively,” Te told members of the print and digital media during the forum.
She stressed that learning combat sports also entails responsibility, emphasizing the importance of using acquired skills appropriately.
Te said Wildcat Boxing aims to maintain a welcoming, ego-free training environment, particularly for students, working professionals and newcomers who may be hesitant to enter a boxing or martial arts gym.
The gym also recognizes the importance of balancing training with adequate rest to help participants avoid burnout and sustain their commitment to fitness.
“It’s also okay to rest and take a break when needed. Burnout happens, and it’s part of the process,” Te said. “What’s important is that when they’re ready to come back, we’re always here to support and motivate them again!”
She also outlined plans for community initiatives and expansion, including the possibility of opening additional branches across Metro Manila to reach more people interested in combat sports and physical fitness.
Through broader community outreach and accessible training programs, Wildcat Boxing and Fitness hopes to encourage more Filipinos to embrace an active lifestyle while developing the discipline and confidence that martial arts can foster.
