MANILA — Filipino tennis star Alex Eala continued her impressive run on the WTA Tour after defeating American Alycia Parks, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, in the second round of the National Bank Open on Wednesday in Toronto, Canada.
Eala dominated the opening set before Parks mounted a comeback in the second. The Filipina, however, regained control in the deciding set, breaking serve at crucial moments to secure the victory and book her place in the third round.
The win also allowed Eala to avenge her earlier defeat to Parks at this year’s Australian Open, highlighting the continued growth of the reigning Washington Open champion.
Awaiting Eala in the next round is American Caty McNally, who pulled off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by eliminating reigning Wimbledon champion Linda Nosková.
Eala will also see action in doubles, teaming up with seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams. The wildcard pair will face Japan’s Miyu Kato and Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in their opening-round match.
