MANILA, Philippines — Seventeen collegiate women’s volleyball teams from the UAAP and NCAA officially came together at the historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum as the 2026 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Unity Cup got underway.
The opening ceremony drew volleyball fans to the iconic venue, where representatives of the participating schools took part in the traditional parade, setting the stage for another highly competitive season of collegiate volleyball.
The participation of 17 teams from the country’s two major collegiate leagues highlighted the Unity Cup’s continuing effort to bring together schools that normally compete separately while promoting sportsmanship and camaraderie.
Dr. Ian Laurel, chairman and president of ACES Athletic Events and Sports Management Inc., said the tournament provides student-athletes with an opportunity to test themselves against some of the country’s top collegiate teams.
“The Shakey’s Super League continues to break barriers by bringing together the finest UAAP and NCAA schools under one roof,” Laurel said.
He added that the tournament seeks to provide athletes with a platform to demonstrate their dedication, hard work and passion for volleyball.
SPAVI CEO Vic Gregorio likewise underscored the importance of supporting women’s sports and grassroots development.
“We are immensely proud to fuel the passion of these young athletes,” Gregorio said, stressing that the Unity Cup also seeks to develop discipline, values and unity among young athletes.
SSL ambassador Shaina Nitura delivered an inspirational message to the participating teams, urging players to give their best and uphold the pride of their respective schools.
“Sa bawat koponan at manlalaro na nandito ngayon, patunayan natin na ang volleyball ay nagkakaisa sa ating lahat,” Nitura said.
With the opening ceremony completed, the 17-team field now turns its attention to the matches, where teams will battle for the Unity Cup championship.
