MANILA — More frequent rains are expected across the Philippines after PAGASA formally declared the start of the southwest monsoon season.
The weather bureau said prevailing southwesterly winds have consistently affected the country in recent days, prompting the official announcement of the habagat’s onset.
While Severe Tropical Storm Domeng continues to strengthen, PAGASA explained that the monsoon system will be the dominant weather feature influencing conditions over much of the country. Western Luzon, including Metro Manila, is expected to experience periods of rain and thunderstorms in the coming days.
The declaration also signals the beginning of the country’s wetter months, with monsoon activity usually reaching its peak during July and August.
Communities vulnerable to flooding are closely monitoring developments. Residents of Barangay Road District in Quezon City expressed concern over recurring floods that frequently accompany prolonged rainfall.
Authorities have readied emergency alert systems to provide early warnings to residents when weather conditions deteriorate. Some families said they have become accustomed to moving valuables and seeking safer areas whenever floodwaters begin to rise.
Residents are also hoping that a pumping station currently under construction will soon be completed, believing it could significantly lessen the impact of flooding in their neighborhood.
PAGASA urged the public to monitor official forecasts and advisories as the rainy season settles in, bringing an increased possibility of floods and rain-induced incidents.
